Merrill Feitell is the author of the award-winning short story collection Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes, winner of the Iowa Prize for Short Fiction.
Her fiction has appeared in such publications as Best New American Voices, Virginia Quarterly Review, Glimmer Train, and American Short Fiction and has been short-listed in Best American Short Stories and Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards.
Her text-image essays and narrative nonfiction have appeared in Electric Literature and Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern.
She has been awarded fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Taos Writers’ Conference, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, and Columbia University, where she earned her MFA.
She has taught creative writing for over a decade, serving on MFA faculty at University of Maryland and at Cal State San Bernardino and teaching courses at Columbia University, Pratt Institute, SUNY Purchase, and Colorado College.
Born and raised in New York City, Merrill now lives in Los Angeles and teaches at California Institute of the Arts, Todos Santos Writers’ Workshop, and UCLA Extension Writers’ Program. She has been Fiction Editor for Forklift, Ohio: A Journal of Poetry, Cooking, and Light Industrial Safety since 2007.
